Overview

Sadhana=Practice

Sadhana is the foundation of living yoga, the well from which we draw as students and teachers on the path.

Whether you are a yoga teacher or a dedicated lifelong practitioner, cultivating and sustaining the habit of daily practice is an integral part of moving from “doing” yoga to being yoga, allowing it to permeate your life, to move from the mat into every aspect of your life.

For many of us, developing and sustaining a home practice can be challenging. Over the past several years, most of us have moved some aspect of our practice into our homes. This course is about re-igniting or sustaining this home practice and exploring ways to make it your own.

They say it takes 40 days to make something a habit, and so over 40 days we will commit to ourselves, in the context of community, and offer a daily practice.

The 40 days

Our 40 day practice will be structured in four 10-day segments, to help sustain our focus and build the tools for a self-reflective home practice.

A new segment will be released every ten days, with recorded practices that you can use as the foundation for your daily practice no matter where you live or what time works for your personal practice.

  • Days 1-10 | Tapas | building the commitment, or fervor, for practice
  • Days 11-20 | Svadhyaya| self-study, exploring our own path and commitment
  • Days 21-30 | Ishvara Pranidhana | surrender, finding ease in practice
  • Days 31-40 | Sustainability | creating a lasting commitment

The first 3 sections are built around the kriya yoga, or the yoga of action, as outlined in Patañjali’s yoga sutras. These are the last three niyamas in the 8-limbed path, and they provide a meaningful lens for our understanding of the practice.

Each 10-day section will include

  • A discussion of the theme for the 10 days
  • Meditation
  • Pranayama
  • Asana

The practices for each 10-day segment are approximately 30 minutes total (across meditation, pranayama and asana). In addition, three practices—a mantra, morning form movement practice, and sun salutations are intended to be practiced all 40 days. In total, about 60 minutes of guided practice are anticipated for each day, and we recommend setting aside an additional 11-24 minutes for meditation.

Readings

You’ll also be encouraged to choose 1-2 dharma books to visit during our time together. This can be something you’re already reading (or something that’s been sitting on a shelf with the intention to read it).

Reflections

Each week will also include prompts for reflections designed to help you explore your deepest intention and to craft a practice that works with the realities of your life.

Janet Stone

Janet’s studentship began at 17 under the meditation teachings of Prem Rawat. His reverence for simplicity and finding joy in the rise and fall of life live on in her practice and teaching today. In 1996, she traveled to India, the birthplace of her grandfather, and became dedicated to the path of yoga. Janet blends the alchemy of her own practice with decades of studentship. She aspires not to teach but to allow the practice to emanate from her, letting awareness blend with movement and breath. Based in Bali and San Francisco, she leads immersions, retreats, workshops and more.

FAQS

How is thE training setup?

We are using an intuitive, yet robust learning platform, called Mighty Networks. Upon enrollment, you should have received several invitations to join the spaces for your training program and the courses that are part of it. Everyone will have a training hub with your curriculum and requirements and the teacher training community (which includes all programs and all cohorts).

How can I review my program requirements?

Every program has a training hub. There, you'll find a few different overviews of your requirements, including a training packet and a checklist (designed to print or use with a pdf markup app). You'll also see the forms you'll submit as you finish each required course or activity.

I'm missing a course in my account. How can I add it?

We'll send an email in response to your training application. There, we'll answer any questions you asked in your application and share a list of your training spaces, with links to add them.

I chose the electives option. How can I find out which electives I can choose?

The pages for the electives programs will stay up-to-date as we add new electives. You can see dates and number of elective hours for each option there:
200 hour: https://www.janetstoneyoga.com/school/200-hour-electives
300 hour: https://www.janetstoneyoga.com/school/300-hour-electives

note: if you are in the fully virtual or residential hybrid option, you won't have any electives.

How Should I structure my time for Virtual Courses?

We recommend setting aside one day as your deep dive day. Courses are set up with weekly modules (if you have 40 Days of Practice, that's the only exception, with 10 day modules). On your deep dive day, you can plan to spend 1-2 hours. You'll watch a dharma talk or overview video for the week in that time, and you can review the practices offered. It's a good time to plan how you'll integrate the practices throughout the week.

When you are planning your week of practice, truly consider the context of your life. If you only have 15 minutes, plan for a 15 minute practice. If you can establish a pattern of daily practice (even if some days are 5 minutes of meditation, and a mantra you have queued up, then that's a practice).

I lost my momentum, how can I resume

We're here for you, and we've been there, too. Jump into the next course that's being offered in your curriculum (see https://www.janetstoneyoga.com/ for the calendar of courses) or finish the one that you started and only have a little left. It's okay—returning is what matters.

I have questions. How can I get answers, help, or regroup?

You can email us (see below), join a study hall with Connie, post your question in your training curriculum, or DM us (Connie) in the Mighty Network.

Where can I find upcoming study halls and other live offerings?

Once you have added all of your courses and spaces, your events calendar (https://school.janetstoneyoga.com/events) in the Mighty Network will include any upcoming live events for you.

Who can I email if my question wasn’t answered here?

Email school@janetstoneyoga.com if you have other questions.

FAQ

How is this course set up?

We are using an intuitive and engaging platform called Mighty Networks.

When you register and pay for the course, you'll be invited to join the course space there, which includes the curriculum and community discussion space all in one spot.

Will I get access to everything at once?

In order to provide a container for this practice and process, new practices will be offered every 10 days. As soon as you sign up, you'll get access to introductory materials that will help you orient toward the practices.

I live in a different timezone (or country or continent)? Will I be able to participate in the course?

The course is setup so that it works for individuals no matter where they live in the world. New content will be released each week, and you can work through the practices, videos and exercises at your own pace. Live offerings will be recorded, in case the times don’t work for your timezone or schedule.

The community space allows for conversations to be ongoing and for individuals from nearby locations to find one another.

In what circumstances can I get a refund?

The course is non-refundable, since you get lifetime access to the content. If you have serious extenuating circumstances, email school@janetstoneyoga.com and we'll discuss options.

How do I request a sliding scale rate or apply for a partial scholarship? Or How do I know if I qualify for these options?

We trust that each individual knows their current and historical financial experience best. Sliding scale rates are readily available to you if the options make it feasible for you to join us. If the sliding scale rates feel like a financial stretch, we invite you to request a partial scholarship. The request form is quick and easy and will direct you to the scholarship payment options.

Can I rewatch or review content from earlier modules?

Yes, absolutely. Once content for a week is unlocked, you will have access to that in the future.

When we offer the course again (usually a year later), some modules are briefly unavailable, but they'll reopen and you'll have the option to participate again at no cost (including any additions to the curriculum and any live events that are offered).

How much time should I plan to spend on the course every day?

We have designed the course to offer some flexibility. We know that everyone's lives are in different spaces and that each day can vary.

We recommend setting aside about 60 minutes for practice, at least 10 minutes for reading, and approximately 15 minutes for reflection each day; or around a total of 1.5 hours. However, we know some days may not allow for a practice of that length, and the most important thing is that you carve out some time every day for movement and sitting.
